Oscars Madness

Ughhhhhh my blog has been so abandoned recently and I do apologise, however after last nights Oscars my motivation has hit again and after finishing one of the toughest essays I’ve ever written I am awarding myself some time to write about the Oscars.

Everyone and I mean EVERYONE seems to be so wrapped up in the envelope madness of what happened last night, and in case you live under a rock, someone was handed the wrong envelope and said the wrong name? It was an accident and obviously (hopefully) not done on purpose, everyone involved is embarrassed and has apologised profusely.

Know who hasn’t apologised? Casey Affleck.

I’m sorry but I am sick of seeing people who are just total scumbags being rewarded for their talent as if their scumbaggieness has nothing to do with them as a person. Casey Affleck has TWO sexual harassment suits against him… TWO.

In a year where Amber Heard was blamed for Johnny Depp’s heinous behaviour towards her despite his ‘people’ admitting he never hit her SOBER (so he did hit her) I am just totally sick of this behaviour from people who know better.

For both men to have received rounds of applause and awards and compliments when they have committed actions against women just totally unimaginable to a normal and decent human being is vile and is just another reason women don’t report crimes against them.

For me this is a deeper issue though, if you met someone who had been found guilty of domestic violence, sexual harassment or sexual assault you would not spend time rewarding them with compliments and money. This is a celebrity issue, it is the issue of money and fame and being held as higher than regular humanity, in modern society it cannot just be about being talented. It must be earned, this esteem and fame should be earned whilst the rest of the world has such darkness and sadness with wars, prejudice and hatred being thrown around we look to celebrities and award ceremonies to bring about a happier and safer feeling.

I cannot and will not enjoy ANYONE who has disregarded another persons safety or wellbeing at the expense of their own and as such I no longer look to celebrities as better than us, once the likes of Emma Roberts (arrested for domestic violence against her boyfriend), Johnny Depp (domestically abused Amber Heard), Casey Affleck (sexual harassment charges) and Mel Gibson (racist) are blacklisted within Hollywood I will again feel safe in watching award ceremonies without being told that my safety and wellbeing is okay to disregard because these people are ‘talented’.

I am grateful for those who do stick up for the rights of others and those celebrities who also find this behaviour unacceptable however their voices need to be louder not just for them but for Hollywood in general.

This post was inspired by Caroline O’Donoghue’s article Brie Larson made it pretty damn clear she wasn’t going to celebrate Casey Affleck’s win”

Why I’ll be voting remain tomorrow

As a politics student, voting is extremely important to me, as I believe it gives everyone a voice and I think it is our responsibility to educate ourselves fully and make an informed decision. As such voting allows us to complain about those in power- whether you voted for them or not- if you choose not to vote, in my opinion, you have no right to say how you feel about the political outcome.

I totally understand people being disillusioned with politicians and the way things are run, but with more young people getting involved politically, it will hopefully make politics more progressive for the country.

The arguments on both sides- for remain and brexit- have been negative and weak, no doubt making a marked difference as to how voters will react towards politicians on both sides after the referendum. I think the brexit arguments especially from UKIP have been extremely racist and ignorant, especially the Farage billboard that looks a little familiar, guess he did Nazi that coming? (I couldn’t resist sorry)

With a rhetoric very similar to that of the Nazi party also, many of the same arguments have almost been copy and pasted from Hitlers own propaganda. The anti-immigration argument has genuinely disgusted me, as a member of a family that has been blessed by immigration, it has truly blown me away as to how anyone can support the hatred of others and turn it into a political tool.

It also makes me laugh that there is even an argument for border controls as currently the United Kingdom is not- and has never been- a member of the Schengen passport-free area, which allows the UK (wait for it….) border controls. This must thoroughly embarrass Nigel Farage as he recently tweeted claiming we did not have any and that exiting the EU would allow this. Awkward…Screen Shot 2016-06-22 at 17.32.32

I have met some amazing people thanks to the EU, my supervisor at work is Polish, she works extremely hard and pays tax, as such is not costing the tax payer a penny and is in fact contributing to our economy, and I cannot imagine not having known her. My mum works with many foreign doctors from all around the world who come to this country and save lives and contribute to our economy by paying tax. If you vote in a government who ride the wave of recession on cuts and austerity, that is exactly what you will receive, blaming austerity on refugees and immigration policies is wrong.

I think immigration has blessed this country in many ways and claiming our nation is ‘Great’ is we choose to exit the EU on the basis of immigration is laughable. If we has a brexit argument which was based on genuine statistics and facts, not fear mongering or blaming others for our own issues, I might listen. But the arguments of ‘the money we’ll save will go to the NHS’ coming from the mouths of Conservatives or UKIP members is ridiculous as both parties openly favour privatisation of our beloved NHS.

For decades our country has seen positives come from teaming up with other european countries from World War II up until today as we try to gain positive resolution to our refugee crisis (AND YES IT IS OUR REFUGEE CRISIS). Personally I am a fan of human rights and workers rights and my holiday entitlement, all of which I can thank the EU for imposing on our government and I can bet that if we do leave tomorrow the Conservative government would get rid of all ofthat helping bigger businesses to make more by treating workers worse (thanks for the 0 hours contract though David Cameron and co.).

I would beg you, think of your neighbour, think of all of the hard workers and think of the future of the younger generations when voting tomorrow. Vote for love and acceptance over fear and hatred. If you prefer economic proof- listen to the experts on this one.

I will be voting #bremain tomorrow, will you?

My Favourites

I have never done one of these before but last month I had so many things I loved that I felt like I had to write a blog post about my must-haves. I always enjoy seeing these and often they end up being my favourites too!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit- That Glow

I was lucky enough to get this from my wonderful boyfriend as a present for him leaving for 6 months, I had the Jaclyn HillxBecca Champagne Pop highlighter and used it continuously and it was amazing. Switching over to this highlight palette is amazing, with this kit there is a white shade, two pink shades and a brown shade, this mixture of colours allows me to use highlight EVERYWHERE. I use the darker shade on my contour, the pinks on my cheeks with my blush and the white on my nose and cupids bow and it honestly just brightens my face up so much. In my opinion you can never have too much of a highlight. Glow to your hearts content.

642 Tiny Things to Write About

This book is so much fun to go through on a train or on my lunch break, it has trained me to find smaller prompts for my creative writing and it has given me such positive results. I try to write each day but this book almost forces me to and I can get the same prompt from the book and write two different things and often end up writing a story that I genuinely enjoy writing.

This workout app is such a heaven send, it lets you choose the area to work out, fast forward any you don’t want to/can’t do, and it lets you time yourself. I am a very lazy person but recently I have been addicted to this, it also tells you approximately how many calories you’ve burned, and it’s free!! There is the main app, and six additional apps that concentrate on certain areas; Abs & Core, Butt, Upper Body, Lower Body, Cardio and Stretching. I have all downloaded and use them all but my favourite is Abs & Core, Butt and Lower Body.

House Of Cards

My boyfriends mum actually told me to watch this after telling her my degree was in Journalism and Politics, and I must say it was one of the best recommendations ever. I was addicted and have finished the show up to the most recent season, I’m desperately waiting on season 5 and can’t wait to have chats with Jordan’s mum and dad about the last season. It is a political thriller with murder, drugs and two amazing central characters who draw you into a love/hate relationship with them.

I Dream Of Shapes

Last month I was lucky enough to be invited to model for this amazing fashion brand by my amazing friend Lucie from Tetris and Cheesecakes. ‘Modelling’ for this company was so fun and I am laughing in most of my pictures purely because modelling with some of the best bloggers I know! This was amazing and I cannot wait to see them more throughout my blogging.

I have always loved Formula 1 and having a partner who loves it too has been so amazing and has really given me more of an insight into the sport, I have missed so much of it this year due to work but have always made sure I have caught up. Usually by the 8th/9th race you can see a pattern in who will win the championship, however this year it has been so close with 18 year old Max Verstappen winning the Spanish Grand Prix and the podium being a mixed bag it has been so much more fun. Lewis Hamilton will always be my favourite as I love the rockstar status he has brought to the sport.

I apologise for the absence from my blog recently, but I have been working so much recently that I have been so tired but luckily I’ve had a few days to relax and chill with family and that has allowed me to concentrate on my blog a bit more. I promise I will get a better routine soon but needing money is the worst!

What were your favourites recently? Do you love any of mine?

My views on religion

I am not a fan of writing about controversial topics as I can sometimes be very opinionated and stubborn- which I completely admit. My blog is not a place I would choose to push my personal ideas and beliefs onto others and would never try to force others to think the same way as I do.

My views on religion are rudimentary at best, I have a lot of respect for those with strong religious beliefs because I don’t think I could have that level of faith, however I do not have any time at all for those who use parts of religious script to push their own agenda, and this is something I am seeing more of as I grow up. A huge part of me as a person is to accept everyone no matter who they are, what they do, what they look like and who they love, whether or not I agree with them and their beliefs or not. The idea that if I believe in one type of god I must hate other humans based on an aspect of them is just totally wrong in my opinion and I find it impossible to ignore in most religions.

I cannot believe that a god- of any kind- would make something so huge, like the human race, and hope that we would kill each other, hurt each other, hate each other and use one another for personal gain. I also don’t believe that anyone should kill in the name of a god because I would hate anyone to kill another person in my name, and I doubt a god would be okay with it either as they apparently made us all EQUAL. I cannot imagine the goal of any god was for huge inequality on so many levels, health, education, safety, wealth and lifestyle, it just seems mind boggling that people perpetuate this in the name of a god. To me it’s like having a whole bunch of children and hoping they will hurt each other and hate one another, it just doesn’t make sense.

One thing I do like about religion is when it brings people together and preaches love and acceptance no matter what. I love picking out nice parts of religions and aim to live my life through positive action and reaction. I have always loved learning about religion and as a child was lucky enough that my mother was very open and let me learn about all different religions. She supported me in any religion I chose to follow however I have chose to abstain from religion totally and am purely a bystander.

This part of my personality has always been important to me as I told my (pretty religious) grandparents at a very young age I didn’t believe a god would hate someone for who they love or what colour their skin is, and I shocked them a little when I told them I didn’t want to be religious at all.

Having friends and family with different religious views is so amazing because I get to enjoy things like eid, christmas and diwali and not feel like I should be judged. I understand why religion is so important to people and I honestly do enjoy seeing people who have a very spiritual belief in a god and I totally respect them and love hearing about their beliefs. I just can’t remove that negative part of religion and for me it is important to not hate others based on something that may or may not exist.

I will leave you with a little quote from Julian Casablancas:

Religion is never the problem; it’s the people who use it to gain power.

Thank you for reading my very ranty post, what do you think about religion? Do you follow one? If so what do you love about it?

Justin Trudeau Who Is He And Why Is He Important?

I find Justin Trudeau’s career as Canadian Prime Minister extremely interesting already and we are only 4 months in. This is for many reasons, the history behind the man baffles me but even more so his family history intrigues me. On top of this his first actions as prime minister were not only astounding but also revolutionary, and for once those who deemed Canada irrelevant suddenly started to take note of the country and its politics. His words as prime minister have put other leaders to shame, quickly making him a favourite amongst left wing political fans. So how did this man become so popular amongst Canadians and the rest of the world so fast?

His younger life

Son of Pierre Trudeau the late Canadian Prime Minister, born on 25th of December 1971 in Ottawa, he was destined for a life in politics with American President Richard Nixon foreseeing his future in a toast whilst visiting the Canadian Prime Minister: “I’d like to toast to the future Prime Minister of Canada: To Justin Pierre Trudeau.”

Following his Bachelors in literature at McGill University in 1994 and his degree in education in 1998 he worked as a teacher until his father died in 2000. Following the eulogy he gave at his father’s funeral (showing him to be a wonderful public speaker), which was televised nationally, there was a huge outcry for him to move into politics however he graciously declined and instead took on a job in a youth service programme in Montreal. He first dipped his toe in the political pool when he chaired a Liberal Task Force on youth renewal in 2006, it would be the following year that he began his campaign and subsequently won the Montreal Papineau district in 2008.

His talents do not just end there though, alongside his political prowess he has proven himself able to act and box, as he starred as Talbot Papineau in the TV movie The Great War in 2007 and defeating Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau in a charity boxing match in 2012. His charismatic personality could’ve been a reason that he became Liberal party leader in 2013. In 2015 he won office at 43 years old making him the second youngest Canadian Prime Minister.

However since 2015 we have fallen in love with him for so many reasons, all of which have broken the mould of world leader. I have eleven personal reasons for adoring him but I’m sure there are probably hundreds more reasons to love this majestic man.

He is Feminist

With many world leaders fearing the word ‘feminist’-including Britain- it has been deemed a dirty word for a head of state to call themselves this. Justin Trudeau, however, openly and repeatedly has called himself a feminist to the shock and delight of many. Trudeau himself does not seem to be able to understand this excitement and has insisted “I am going to keep saying loud and clear that I am a feminist until it is met with a shrug,” at the UN’s 60th session of the commission on the status of women. As a young woman and feminist myself this was an extraordinary thing to hear, he continued on to ask other world leaders to embrace a gender balanced cabinet as he did when he won office, this astounded me as women have been asking for this for decades. He is an extremely important person in the current fight for equality as these do not seem to have political motives but are simply common sense for Trudeau.

His Gender Balanced Cabinet

His cabinet appointments made sense, which might sound ridiculous but lets look at Britain as a comparison. The equality minister is a woman, great? No. She chose to vote AGAINST the equal marriage rights bill that allowed gay marriage across the UK. The energy and climate change minister has admitted questioning the existence of climate change… seriously. Now to look at Canada’s cabinet- the first Canadian in space- Marc Garneau is transport minister, pretty understandable really as he’s probably been on the most extreme transport man has created. The defence minister is Harjit Sajjan, a decorated lieutenant colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces, having served in both Bosnia and Afghanistan. He appointed the first Muslim in cabinet, a man disabled in a drive-by shooting, two aboriginals and an immigrant from India- as well as boasting a 50/50 cabinet. It is this dedication to equality for all that has grabbed the attention of liberals across the world.

The Obama/Trudeau Bromance

This is my all time favourite bromance’s; Obama won the hearts of the world with his charming and charismatic personality however having two world leaders, who’s countries are right next to one another, who both won through their charm we all knew Trudeau’s first visit to the US would be memorable.

I honestly couldn’t put it into words now perfect this was so I felt the video would be better than me explaining. As the two joke around about beers, hockey and who’s country is better it highlights the reason both men won. With Obama having arguably one of the most successful presidencies, what does the future hold for Trudeau? I’m very excited to see.

His Treatment of Syrian Refugees

The picture of dead baby, Alan Kurdi, washing up on the beach that lead to worldwide uproar for a conflict resolution in Syria was felt strongly in Canada, as family of Alan lived there and had applied for refugee status to be granted which was held up by immigration in Canada. To add insult to injury Harper promised to take 10,00 refugees if he won another term while Trudeau’s target if he won was 25,000 and 10,000 before 2016. Trudeau has in fact met this goal already with the 25,000th refugee arriving on 28th February 2016 with headlines from 4th January 2016 claiming that he wouldn’t reach this goal. His love and compassion was evident when welcoming these refugees telling them this was their home now and even attempting some Arabic. In just five months he has made a mockery of Harper and the Canadian Conservative Party, so much so that he seems to have disappeared from Canadian politics recently.

He is Hilarious

Most politicians have a very serious demeanour and they enjoy this as they hope it will give the public opinion that they can deal with important political decisions. However, Trudeau started his campaign with humour with hilarious adverts that poked fun of him and were humorous to inspire votes.

On top of this he is not shy to situations that might make him look silly- famously taking part in traditional Indian dancing which he carried out perfectly- of course. He showed his humour during his visit to the United States as well.

He Adores his Wife

Trudeau is married to Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau a Canadian television host and it is clear that they are incredibly in love, on their first date Trudeau told Sophie “I’m 31 years old, and I’ve been waiting for you for 31 years,” marrying only two years later. The two still do matching fancy dress at halloween, however seem unable to win their three adorable children round, it is clear that this is a strong and inspiring couple and I am excited to see more of them. o-JUSTIN-TRUDEAU-HALLOWEEN-facebook

He is a Geek

As is obvious from the last picture, Trudeau is a huge geek, even attending ComicCon in Ottawa in 2015 in an adorable Superman shirt. His self-confessed geek-ism gives him a relatable, and awesome, edge with younger voters. Again, I don’t think this is actually a political movement, I genuinely believe he is a massive geek.

He Speaks French

He speaks French. I mean, he looks like that AND speaks the language of love! What isn’t there to love? However he gushes regularly over how wonderfully his wife speaks Spanish!

He has Tattoos

As someone with a few tattoos I am so sick of being told I will never be taken seriously- Trudeau has hopefully silenced some of those people as he has two tattoos and is prime minister- he is also not shy about them taking his top off without feeling embarrassed when showing them.

He is Open About His Drug Use

With many politicians being annoyingly hypocritical about drug use (George Osborne) Trudeau is open about his past having admitted smoking marijuana and has actually called for the drug to be legalised in Canada. I myself have never touched drugs, never even smoked a cigarette, but I enjoy his honesty and the fact he refuses to be embarrassed by his past.

He Can Balance Babies

Yup. You just saw the Canadian Prime Minister balancing a baby, and if you don’t love him by now, I doubt I’ll ever win you over!

Justin Trudeau is an incredibly remarkable man, and he’s not even been in office a year. I am so excited to see what he does for Canada and the impact he makes on the rest of the world. What do you think about him and his ideas?
